The Sad Story of the Ponderosa Twins

Family groups often go through the mill, and often at the hands of their overbearing parents or management (or both), but if you thought the Jacksons had it bad with their horrific father wait until you hear about trials and tribulations of the Ponderosa Twins Plus One.

Formed in Ohio in 1970, the confusingly-named Ponderosa Twins Plus One – who, as far as I am aware had absolutely nothing to do with Bonanza - actually consisted of five members (just like a certain Jackson Five), two sets of identical twins Alfred and Alvin Pelham, and Keith and Kirk Gardner – who had been performing as the Ponderosa Twins for around a year or so - along with their chum Ricky Spicer, who joined in 1970. All five attended the Patrick Henry Jr. High School on the east side of Cleveland.

PT+1 came to the attention of Bobby Massey of soul act The O’Jays. Accompanied by Massey, they recorded three singles for Chuck Brown’s Horoscope Records. At this point, Brown took over their management. Their debut, a cover of Sam Cooke’s You Send Me peaked at number 23 on Billboard’s Soul chart. In 1971, the group released their album, 2 + 2 + 1 = Ponderosa Twins Plus One. It’s not a bad album at all: even Billboard reckoned that even if the group were something of “a Johnny-come-lately in the bubblegum soul sound” they were still “out of sight”.

Bound became their second single, with the label altering its name to Astroscope, and this peaked at number 47 on the Soul chart. Although they played many shows and supported a number of big-name acts, after 1973’s non-album single Tomorrow’s Train/Come Back Sunshine,  the band would make no further recordings. They disbanded in 1975: in a court deposition singer Ricky Spicer would later state that the principal reason for their parting ways was that they were broke: “The Group toured for months, sometimes performing twice in a single day. Although the Group was promised payments for their performances, Mr. Brown and Saru [his company] failed to make any payments to Ricky or the other members of the Group for any performances. In 1975, the group fell apart due to the lack of royalties and no revenue from their live shows.”

Ricky Spicer went on to work with stars including Gladys Knight and James Brown. Sadly his cohorts were not so lucky. One of the Pelham twins suffered from mental health issues, and one of the Gardner twins has been incarcerated in an Ohio penitentiary since 1980 for various offenses. Disillusioned, Ricky Spicer eventually left the music industry became a construction worker. Alvin and Alfred are now both deceased.

The band would have been forgotten for good had it not been for their track, Bound being sampled by rapper Kanye West in his 2013 song Bound 2, which featured on his huge international hit Yeezus. Ricky Spicer filed a lawsuit against West, as well as Roc-A-Fella Records, The Island Def Jam Music Group, Rhino Entertainment and Universal Music Group, citing copyright infringement. The following year Spicer sued Vogue magazine and its publisher Condé Nast, after Bound 2 was used in a promotional video for the magazine’s April edition, which featured West and his wife Kim Kardashian. According to court papers, at the time both Keith and Kirk were incarcerated, but Ricky had power of attorney to act on behalf of the Gardner twins and for the families of the late Pelham twins. The court case against West was settled for an undisclosed amount in 2016.

Here are a couple of tracks from 2 + 2 + 1 = Ponderosa Twins Plus One, Turn Around You Fool and Take Me Back

    1. Great reply, on fact check were the boys attended Jamison. They in fact attended John F. Kennedy High School where we attended. I was a member of Errol Gaye and the Imaginations. We joined them in 1974 and later became CASH i 1977. The twins were in my home room with me Dennis and my twin brother Danny Roberson. 2. What crimes did Keith and Kirk commit? and if they are still alive, when are they being let out of jail? Is Ricky also still alive?

    1. The court documents simply state that the twins are 'currently incarcerated', and other sources hint vaguely at 'various crimes', but a search of Ohio State prison records tells me that Kirk is being held indefinitely for a number of crimes including robbery, rape and murder, and tat Keith originally went to prison in 1977 for murder, and was sent down again in 2011 for attempted murder and aggravated robbery.

    2. I believe Ricky is still alive and still protecting the band's legacy, acting on the band's behalf with their blessing

    3. Keith and Kirk is my cousins, we went to Robert Fulton elementary school. They were fighting other people in school and when they he bullies started bothering me, they took matters on their own. They were very protective of each other. They also have a sister named Markita. Keith was released 2007 but his temper landed him back in prison with his brother Kirk.

  3. Thanks for the info Darryl. By an accident I'm listening to their album on Spotify. It's really great music and strange that they never got the success they really deserve. I got to know them through an article in NYTimes in their article on sampled music and Kanye West. It's really tragic to read what became of them. Any further news?

Well enjoying the music right now and added them to my library.

  8. I love their song "Tomorrow's Train. Great tune. Curious if anyone knows if the lyric is "I'll be on tomorrow's train for Frisco" or "I'll be on tomorrow's train for Fresno"? I can't quite make it out.

  9. its wrong that they put this on a "worlds worst records" forum, the only bad thing is the audio quality in the singing,

    1. I agree, it's not the worst. I didn't really thought the audio is bad. I think it adds charm. I've been listening to Bound for days now. I truly wish they had the break they deserved.

  15. This is a very true story, back in 1973 I had a group called the Pickadillys and we sang with harmony and we also would sing at talent contests in Cleveland Ohio!! We were 7, 8 and 9 years old at that time!! Well, in 1972 there was a auditorium named The whk auditorium!! And, the ponderosa twins plus one they auditioned for Mrs. Ross back in the day!! Mrs. Ross, was in charge of whk auditorium!! And we auditioned too, the Ponderosa twins plus one they took the show!! But, we didn't care, because we had our little crush on the Ponderosa twins plus one!! And, we also had a chance to get discovered by Bobby Massey too.. But, something happened and the next thing I knew the group I was in we broke up!! I still sing where ever I go, 😁 I have a few videos of me singing on YouTube!! If anyone, wanna check me out, just type in Kimberlynn Artis videos!! I will always remember the Ponderosa twins plus one, I still have their first 45..And, I know that's a classic!! God bless everyone!! If you have any talent, it doesn't matter what it is!! Never give up!!

  19. Im 25 years old and the song from these guys called “Bound” put me in a state of nostalgia, I had flashbacks of childhood and a lot of other moments. Had to search them out when I found out the song was from the 70’s. Sad the events they had to face. Everyday I realize why this genre is called Soul.
